Tango Fundamentals
Learn correct posture, balance, and weight placement — the building blocks every tango step depends on. You’ll understand why the walk is the most important movement in Argentine Tango.
Join our 8-week beginner Argentine Tango class in Burnaby, BC. Just minutes from Vancouver.
No experience or partner needed.

This 8-week Argentine Tango beginner class is your introduction to one of the world’s most expressive social dances. Held every Wednesday evening in Burnaby at our Sperling Avenue studio, the course is designed for people who have never danced tango before, or never danced at all. You’ll learn the foundational skills of Argentine Tango in a supportive, small-group environment led by an instructor with more than 35 years of experience.
Argentine Tango is different from ballroom tango. It’s improvised, intimate, and deeply connected to the music. In this beginner class, you’ll discover how to walk with a partner in close embrace, navigate the dance floor with confidence, and begin to interpret the rich musical traditions that make tango unique. Each session builds on the last, so by the end of the eight weeks you’ll have the foundation to attend social tango events (called milongas) and dance with anyone.
Whether you’re looking for a creative outlet, a way to meet people, or simply something new to try on a Wednesday night, this class offers a welcoming community and a genuinely rewarding experience. Our Burnaby studio welcomes dancers from across Vancouver, New Westminster, and the Greater Vancouver area. No experience is required and no partner is needed. We rotate during class so everyone gets to dance with everyone.
Every class builds on the last. Here's what we cover over the eight weeks.

Learn correct posture, balance, and weight placement — the building blocks every tango step depends on. You’ll understand why the walk is the most important movement in Argentine Tango.

Discover the art of walking together in close embrace. This is the heart of Argentine Tango — learning to communicate intention and direction through subtle shifts in your body.

Argentine Tango is danced chest-to-chest. You’ll learn how to create and maintain a comfortable, respectful connection that allows both partners to feel every step as one.

Learn how to navigate the dance floor safely, follow the line of dance, and practice the social customs of tango — from the cabeceo (invitation to dance) to floor awareness.

Tango is inseparable from its music. You’ll learn to recognize the rhythm, melody, and feeling of classic tango orchestras and understand how the music guides every movement on the floor.

Put everything together with foundational sequences — the salida (basic step), ocho (figure eight), and simple turns. These are the vocabulary you’ll use at every milonga.
Eight consecutive Wednesdays, 7PM to 8PM
Argentine Tango Instructor • 35+ Years of Experience

Geraldine has been teaching and performing Argentine Tango for over 35 years. She brings a rare combination of technical precision and genuine warmth to every class, making even first-time dancers feel at ease from the very first step.
Her teaching philosophy is simple: Tango is for everyone. Whether you’re 25 or 75, shy or outgoing, she meets you where you are and helps you grow. Her students consistently describe her as observant, direct, and encouraging — the kind of teacher who sees what you need before you know you need it.
I’ve really enjoyed tango classes with Gigi. Gigi creates a warm, supportive atmosphere while teaching with professionalism, clarity, and attention to detail. The classes beautifully combine technique, musicality, and connection, making learning both enjoyable and inspiring. I always leave class feeling more confident and motivated. Highly recommended for both beginners and experienced dancers!
Julia BThis is a fabulous and flexible dance training operation headed up by Geraldine Goyer. I have worked with her in many of her lesson groups and individual training over the past several years, and continue to attend lessons, milongas, special guest seminars and intensives. The rates for group lessons, milongas, and drop-ins are very reasonable. The two primary venues for Tango Burnaby are both perfect for their floors, their spaces, and their acoustics.
Lance RuckerGigi is a great tracher and she makes the dance moves easy to understand and follow. Since my husband and I started taking classes with her, we’ve become even more passionate about learning tango.Besides, her warm personality makes the class much more fun and enjoyable.
Mahsa DamirchiGigi is a great dancer and teacher with enthusiasm and passion! My wife and I joined her Tango class for fun and also to get some idea for the first dance of our wedding. We enjoyed it. Class is friendly for beginners and easy to follow. Then we decided to take the private classes with her for our first dance. Gigi worked with us on choreography, which helps to make the dance the best suit for us. The first dance is a success. Many thanks to Gigi!

We are unique as we always create balanced classes by encouraging folks to pre-enroll so that we can keep track of how many men/women we get. If we are short either way by 1 or 2 that is okay because you’ll rotate partners every two to three minutes and get to dance with many like minded dancers like yourself. Folks who show up with out pre-enrolling are welcomed to the class only if there is room and it does not upset the balance.
